FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What kind of grinder will it work with?

A:The sharpener is compatible with most grinders, thanks to the included 4 adapter pins that allow easy attachment to a cordless grinder.

Q:What size of blades will it sharpen?

A:Sharpen blades ranging from 2 3/4" to 5 1/2" in width.

Q:How long should it take to sharpen a blade?

A:The first time you sharpen your blade it will likely take 5 to 10 minutes per edge depending on how bad your blade is. Most of this time will be spent establishing the correct angle. Time will vary depending on the type of grinding wheel you use and how aggressively you grind away material. We suggest small amounts of material removal so as to not overheat the cutting edge. Once you have established the correct angle it should only take a minute or two to sharpen each edge.

Q:Where can it be installed?

A:The sharpener is fully portable when paired with a cordless grinder, making it ideal for use in your shop, on-site, or even in the field. The mounting bracket can be attached to a truck or trailer for easy transport.

Q:What kind of grinder wheel should I use?

A:Flapper Wheel Grit: Suitable for 24-grit to 60-grit grinding

We recommend a 36 or 40 grit flap disc OR a hard disc. Either straight or beveled wheels work equally well.

Type 29 or 27 flap discs will work equally.

36 or 40 grit flap disc will take less material, leave a smoother grind and may be desirable for subsequent re-sharpening, as it will take very few grinding passes to re-sharpen the blades once the proper angle has been established.

If you have very dull or nicked up blades, you’re proficient with an angle grinder, and want to get the job done quickly, a hard disc for metal can be used with caution. This type of wheel will take off material very quickly and should be used with light grinding passes. If it is a new hard disc, we recommend wearing the corner off on some scrap metal before using it on your mower blade.

Q:How do you determine the angle at which the blade needs to be sharpened?

A:The Model 5005 adjusts and locks at angles from 15 to 45 degrees in 5-degree increments, offering maximum versatility. The 15-degree setting is ideal for sharpening the mulching section of bi-level mulching blades, while the 45-degree setting accommodates mower blades with a downward-tilted cutting edge.

Q:What types of blades is it suitable for?

A:The GSTP Sharpener 5005 is designed to quickly and precisely sharpen standard, mulching, and high-lift mower blades, ensuring a consistent and even grind for optimal performance. Its portable design and secure blade hold make it easy to get your blades back to like-new condition in seconds.
